Here's a controlled demonstration of a Li-Ion battery pack exploding while it is in a laptop computer. This failure was caused by the heat of the electric griddle, but such laptop battery fires could also result from a bad battery pack or battery cells, a faulty PC or battery pack protection circuit, or a the application of a traumatic force to the battery pack.

I came across this video with some super geeky guy describing his way to revive a laptop battery. I guess you could try it, too, if you've got an AC-DC converter from the sixties or seventies laying around.

I posted this mostly for its' entertainment value and don't recommend this approach to refreshing your laptop battery.
