Replacement Laptop Batteries

I have a new Sony laptop computer that I use a lot and I need to swap out the OEM battery with one of the replacement laptop batteries that I have. I mostly use my computer for surfing the web, word processing and playing music and video files. Can anybody give me some ideas on how to prolong the battery's operating time so I don't need to keep swapping the replacement laptop batteries in my computer?
