Compaq Computer Corporation was founded in 1982 and later that year introduced the Compaq Portable. The Compaq Portable was a forerunner to today's laptop and notebook computers, but was more aptly described as a "suitcase computer" that required an electrical connection and used a small CRT for its' display.
Compaq grew in the 80s and 90s by expanding their line to include desktop and server computers and became a price leader in the PC market. However, in the late 90s Compaq lost their direction and was eventually acquired by HP in 2002.
Today, the only branded Compaq notebook is the Presario as the rest of the product line was either discontinued or migrated to the HP brand.
