Packard Bell is a subsidiary of Acer, Inc. of Taiwan who had taken ownership of it in 2008. Prior to that, the prime stake in Packard Bell belonged to NEC since the late 1990s. At that time, the integration of Packard Bell with NEC led it to be the largest US supplier of PCs in the United States with a 15% market share.
Packard Bell BV became one of the leaders in the US distribution of PCs by their fiercely competive pricing structure and by targeting the 'first time' PC user with a simple software interface and ease of hardware setup. However, as the other major brands made inroads in these areas Packard Bell's name became more associated with an inferior product. However, Packard Bell Europe did not suffer from the same stigma that was attached to it in the US market and continues to be a popular brand in Europe since its' withdrawal from the US in 2000. Today Packard Bell is in the same corporate family as Gateway.
