I have an external keyboard and mouse that I use instead of the small laptop ones. I also have a laptop battery that I have not used yet. It is the standard 9-cell battery that came with the computer.

Is there something I I can do now to extend the laptop battery's life before I first charge it since I've been using the computer with the wall charger so far? My brother told me to discharge it completely on a weekly basis and fully recharge it. I have also heard that leaving the laptop plugged in all the time is bad for replacement laptop batties. Is this true? And what should I do regarding my battery if im not really planning on using all that much?

I will be using the laptop solely on battery power when I go on trips and a lot of the time while I'm away at school.
