Chloey asked:
I am going to college in the Fall and I need a laptop computer. I need some help choosing one and I'm not sure what to buy. I will use word processer software to write reports and I also need multimedia capabilities for film and photography classes. I also need to burn DVDs for my project assignments. I'd also like a long laptop battery life and will buy another replacement laptop battery for a spare.

I’ve always liked the Toshiba line of laptops computers. For what you get with them, they are well priced and the laptop battery provided with them generally has a long operating time.
However, for multimedia you may want to consider a Mac laptop. I haven’t owned one, but a friend has and loves it. The biggest downside is the price tag.
I’d go witha MacBook Pro. You can’t beat it for the multimedia capabilities. Make sure that you get it with a web cam.
DELL and Gateway both have some pretty good laptop computers and are competitively priced in the low and mid power segments. Their mid prices models run in the $600-$800 range when they have their deals going. However, you may need to go to a more powerful system depending on the amount and complexity of your multimedia projects.
The best laptops are by Alienware and Falcon, but they cost a lot. If the Vaio fits your needs and you’re happy with it but just want some newer technology, then just get a newer one to update your hardware.
Maybe you should think about upgrading the computer that you now have. It’s east to add more RAM, upgrade the graphics card, add a DVD burner and install a larger hard drive. While you’re at it you might also want to get a replacement laptop battery with more capacity. Well, now that I think aboubt it, it might not be cheaper but it would be fun.
