TAZZLER asked:

I will soon be buying a laptop computer and I was wondering what type of processor I should try to get with it. My desktop PCs are pentium based CPUs, but I understand that I may want something else in the laptop.

I will be using my new laptop to replace my desktop compuuter, and I need it to run games. That is my most important consideration for the new laptop. However, I will need to use it for extended periods of time so I will also need a long battery life and a replacement laptop battery for it.

My friend will help me install more RAM later if I need it, so the supplied laptop does not need to be fully equipped with it. I will also be using an external hard drive, so the installed hard drive is not a big consideration.

Thanks for the suggestions and help! :)

Use at least a pentium class processor and avoid celeron celeron CPSs. Also consider a duo core processor if you can afford it. If you are into gaming, take a look at the AMD line of laptop processors since they are more affordable and give you more bang for the buck.

Intel’s newest processer specifically designed for portable PCs are what I look for when I buy a laptop computer. However, I’m more of a power techie type user and I don’t shop for bargains but performance. I generally first look at HP and Lenovo laptops when I’m shoping.

Well I love AMD and will tout their products till I am blue in the face. But I’ve got to admit that Intel has done very well with its DUO processors and I use the Centrino Duo on my work laptop. It’s pretty powerful for a laptop doesn’t seem to have heat related problems like my older Intel laptop did.

For price, performance and reliability I’d have to say that HP makes some of the best laptop computers. I used to only recommend Dell laptops, but they are making too much junk in the lower end segment of the market and that’s hurting their reputation. Dell is still pretty good in their high-end stuff, but for the complete laptop lineup I recommend HP.

    Just my suggestions.

I’ve used AMD and Intel processors for gaming machines, and they both worked out well for me. However, I personally prefer AMD CPUs because of the pricing structure.

There really is no best brand, but there are definitely better models within supplied by each brand.

If you want your laptop to operate as a gaming machine, then you can expect to spend a lot of money on it. Laptops generally don’t have the power, memory or video card to run many of today’s power hungry games. Also, make sure that you spec you laptop out when you order it since the upgrade options are very limited for laptops. The Alienware models are good gaming laptops, but they are expensive.

Get a laptop with at least 2 GB of RAM at a minimum, a large hard drive and a good video card that has its own memory. Also, get an upgraded laptop battery to replace the standard one that comes with the laptop if you will need to run your laptop unplugged for any length of time.
